LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA (September 2026) – Lake Mead Mohave Adventures (LMMA) will welcome catamaran sailors from across North America to Cottonwood Cove Resort & Marina for the 2026 Hobie Wave North American Championship, taking place Sunday, Oct. 4 through Friday, Oct. 9 on Lake Mohave. The public is invited to experience the action from shore as competitors take to the water for this fast-paced competitive sailing event.

Hosted by Hobie Fleet 51 of Las Vegas in partnership with the Hobie Class Association of North America and HCA Division 2, the championship will bring together sailors to compete aboard Hobie Waves, compact catamarans known for their speed, agility and simplicity.

The championship begins Sunday, Oct. 4, with competitor check-in and a welcome party. Racing days are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5 through Tuesday, Oct. 6, followed by an off day Wednesday, Oct. 7. Competition resumes Thursday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 9, culminating with an awards banquet Friday evening. Spectators can expect competition to kick off at noon and approximately three to five races planned each contest day.

Beyond the racing excitement, the event will showcase the “Hobie Way of Life,” a sailing culture built around a shared appreciation for being on the water, exploring the outdoors and creating lasting friendships. While racing can be highly competitive, the Hobie community is equally known for its camaraderie, with sailors helping one another prepare boats on the beach before competing on the water and gathering together afterward.

“Championship sailing is a rare sight in Southern Nevada, which makes this an especially unique opportunity for visitors to Cottonwood Cove,” said Lisa Duncan, senior director of operations, Lake Mead Mohave Adventures. “The speed of the boats, the desert scenery and the energy surrounding the competition will make this a truly one-of-a-kind experience for spectators.”

“Lake Mohave offers sailing conditions that are unique compared with most inland lakes,” said Richard McCreedy, fleet commodore. “The wind is remarkably consistent, typically coming from one general direction and filling in around noon each day. That steady breeze and open-water conditions can feel more like ocean sailing than traditional lake sailing, making Lake Mohave an ideal venue for a national-level event. This will be our third National Championship at Lake Mohave in more than 20 years, and we’ve hosted more than 20 regattas here during that time. Hobie Fleet 51 also has deep roots in the Las Vegas sailing community and is one of the area’s longest-standing sailing organizations, with an established charter dating back to 1972. With its dependable wind, challenging sailing conditions, proven history of successful regattas and experienced local fleet, Lake Mohave is an outstanding location for this championship.”

Located approximately one hour south of Las Vegas and one hour north of Laughlin, Cottonwood Cove Resort & Marina sits on the Nevada side of Lake Mohave. Vehicle entry to Lake Mead National Recreation Area is $25. For more information on LMMA or Cottonwood Cove Resort & Marina, click here.
