THE MOB MUSEUM ANNOUNCES JUNE PROGRAMS

LAS VEGAS (June 2019) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for June.

Community Safety Forum: Internet Safety for Children

    • Date: Sunday, June 9
    • Time:  2 to 3 p.m.
    • Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor
    • Cost: Free, including free Museum admission, thanks to sponsorship provided by NV Energy. Also, thanks to NV Energy’s generous support – The Mob Museum will provide live streaming of the presentations online.
    • Description: Attend to learn about the types of crimes that exist over the internet and how children are vulnerable to predators. This program is for parents and guardians only.

Summer Movie Series: Classic Gangster Series, “The Public Enemy”

    • Date: Monday, June 10
    • Time: 6 p.m.
    • Location:Historic courtroom on the second floor
    • Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
    • Description: An Irish-American mobster makes his mark in Chicago during the Prohibition era. Starring James Cagney and Jean Harlow.

Follow the Money: The Treasury Department’s Century-Long War on The Mob, Part One of a Four-Part Series

    • Date: Saturday, June 15
    • Time: 10 a.m.
    • Location: The Oscar B. Goodman Room
    • Cost: Free for Museum members or with Museum admission.
    • Speaker: Paul Camacho, retired IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge
    • Description: The timespan dates from 1919 to 1933. Prohibition and a culture of corruption were the great incubators of organized crime. With few laws documented to effectively deal with lawlessness, the Treasury Department’s Intelligence Unit rolled out a powerful new weapon to bring down mob bosses and their elected cronies.

    • Time: 6 p.m.

    • Description: A ruthless hoodlum rises through the ranks of Chicago organized crime in a story based on the real-life mobster Al Capone. Produced by Howard Hughes starring Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak and George Raft.

    • Date: Monday, June 24
    • Time: 6 p.m.
    • Location:Historic courtroom on the second floor
    • Cost: Free for Museum members or with Museum admission.
    • Description: A notorious gangster returns to a life of crime after a three-year stint in prison. Starring James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan.

Stonewall and the Mob: The 50th Anniversary of the Gay Rights Movement

    • Date: Thursday, June 27
    • Time: 7 p.m.
    • Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor
    • Cost: Free for Museum members or with Museum admission.
    • Speaker: Alex Hortis has written extensively on organized crime and public corruption. His articles have been published in New York University Law Review and New York Law School Review.
    • Description: On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, learn about the Mob playing an integral role in the events due to their control of many gay clubs in New York and other cities at the time. The Stonewall uprising, in which New York gay club patrons protested police raids and harassment for five days in late June 1969, marked the beginning of the gay rights movement in America. Historian Alex Hortis will discuss how the results of the riots changed the course of history for the LGBTQ community.

    • Speaker: Paul Camacho, retired IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge
    • Description: The timespan dates from 1934 to 1939. In the wake of prohibition, mobsters learned from the mistakes of fallen kingpins and covered their financial dealings with a veneer of legitimacy and complexity. Treasury Secretary Henry J. Morgenthau and Intelligence Unit chief Elmer Irey joined forces to lift the veil on these schemes, including counterfeiting and the smuggling of illegal narcotics.
