NEON MUSEUM SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE DR. DYDIA DELYSER
PRESENTS “HIDDEN IN BRIGHT LIGHT: THE UNTOLD HISTORY OF NEON”

LAS VEGAS (March 2019) – The Neon Museum introduces “Hidden in Bright Light: The Untold Story of Neon,” a presentation by Dr. Dydia Delyser at the museum’s Ne10 Studio. The event takes place Thursday, May 9 with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.; the lecture begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free with registration at neonmuseum.org. The Ne10 studio is located at 1001 W. Bonanza Rd on the Las Vegas Review Journal’s campus.

Dr. Delyser is the Museum’s 2019 Scholar in Residence and a historical-cultural geographer at California State University, Fullerton. Using both archival and ethnographic methods to explore topics as varied as ghost towns, literary tourism, antique-motorcycle restoration and neon signs, her work seeks to understand the American landscape from the 19 th through the 21 st centuries. Dr. Delyser is currently working on a book with her husband, Paul Greenstein, about the history of neon signs in the U.S.

The presentation will uncover neon’s real history, much of which has been shrouded by myth, and reveal its significance in American culture and communities. Las Vegas, which emerged as a neon city comparatively late, now plays a key role in illuminating neon’s future – in part by preserving its past. The presentation is made possible in part by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC) and the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA).

museum collection also includes nine restored signs installed as public art throughout downtown Las Vegas. Public education, outreach, research, archival preservation and a grant-funded neon sign survey represent a selection of the museum’s ongoing projects.
