LAS VEGAS (May 2019) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for May.

Organized Crime Today Videoconference: Investigating Cybercrime: On the Digital Frontlines

• Date: Saturday, May 4
• Time: 2 p.m.
• Location: Organized Crime Today exhibit area.
• Speakers: Cybercrime experts Art Bowker, who has more than 30 years in law enforcement and corrections, and Todd Shipley, who served for 25 years with the Reno Nevada Police Department; Bowker and Shipley co-authored “Investigating Internet Crime.”
• Description: In an era when the Internet has become central to our lives, it is imperative to be educated on cybercrime – and how to avoid becoming a victim. Join The Mob Museum for a videoconference presentation and hear from two of the foremost experts in the field.

Inside Jobs: Secrets of an FBI Undercover Agent

• Date: Thursday, May 9
• Time: 7 p.m.
• Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
• Speaker: Michael McGowan, a retired FBI special agent, infiltrated Italian and Russian organized crime groups, drug cartels, outlaw motorcycle gangs, contract murderers and corrupt politicians resulting in significant arrests, seizures and lengthy incarcerations. He has been recognized at the highest levels of the FBI and Department of Justice for his assignments domestically and internationally.
• Description: McGowan will discuss his infiltration of three separate Mob families on the East Coast and how his work led to significant arrests and prosecutions. When he was undercover, McGowan worked daily alongside Mob bosses, underbosses, capos, soldiers and associates with La Costra Nostra.

Science of a Crime: Toxicology

• Date: Saturday, May 11
• Time: 2 to 3 p.m.
• Location: Organized Crime Today exhibition on the first floor.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission
• Description: Each month, the Museum’s Science of Crime presentations explore the disciplines and sciences that encompass forensic analysis. At the May program, Nicole Van Aken, a forensic scientist in the toxicology detail of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will present.

The Yosemite Park Murders: How an FBI Agent Took Down a Serial Killer

• Date: Saturday, May 18
• Time: 2 p.m.
• Location: Oscar B. Goodman Room
• Cost: Free for Members or with Museum Admission
• Description: In recognition of National Law Enforcement Week, retired FBI agent Jeff Rinek will explain how he compelled serial killer Cary Stayner to confess to all four of the killings known as the Yosemite Park Murders, an accomplishment made more extraordinary by the fact that FBI nearly pinned the crimes on the wrong suspects. Rinek’s recounting of the confession and what he learned about Stayner provides one of the most revelatory looks ever inside the psyche of a serial killer and a privileged glimpse into the art of interrogation. During his 30-year career with the Bureau, Rinek worked hundreds of investigations involving crimes against children, from stranger abduction to serial homicide to ritualized sexual abuse.

Community Safety Forum: Gang Awareness and Safety

• Date: Sunday, May 19
• Time: 2 to 3 p.m.
• Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor
• Cost: Free, including free Museum admission, thanks to sponsorship provided by NV Energy. Also thanks to NV Energy’s generous support, The Mob Museum will provide live streaming of the presentations online.
• Description: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will lead a discussion on gang activity in our community, and provide insights on how to protect loved ones from joining or affiliating with these criminal groups.
